Pain relief techniques
Pain was around for as long as the human race has existed. It is an integral part of our lives and thanks to this biological mechanism we have been able to evolve and survive as specie. Pain helps us understand that something is wrong in our body whether due to an external factor or an internal disorder. If there was no pain we could just die from cold or stomach diseases without even realizing that something isn't right.
However, after we have received the signal pain turns into a real problem. It makes it really hard to do even the simplest things and is always distracting. Pain is regarded as the primary cause for doctor consultations in the whole world, being associated with thousands of health conditions. It is the main cause of decrease in quality of life and the symptom of more than a half of all health issues known to medicine today. That's why people have always looked for effective ways to relieve pain. The methods of pain relief have evolved throughout the centuries and now pain management is comprised of many practices. These are some of the most common and widely used forms of pain relief in the world:
Oral medications
Oral painkiller medications are definitely the most common choice for managing pain. Drugs like Ultram and Tramadol provide fast pain relief in cases of moderate to severe acute pain. If available in extended release form these drugs also help relieve chronic pain conditions. Most oral painkillers work by blocking nervous pain signals transmitted to the brain, making the person feel that there's no pain at all.
Physical therapy
Physical therapy is widely used for relieving chronic pain, especially when it's caused by specific conditions such as trauma, arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle spasms and many others. It is usually performed by a professional therapist who applies pressure to the affected area making sure that its functions are restored properly. Physical therapy is not very effective for relieving acute pain.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese practice that dates thousand years back. It involves application of numerous small thin needles to specific points of the body, which are believed to regulate the flow of vital energy (“qi”) throughout the body. Numerous studies have confirmed that acupuncture is quite effective in relieving various chronic pain conditions and just a few sessions may be enough to get relief for such problems as arthritis. However, acupuncture is quite ineffective in relieving acute pain.
Electrical and magnetic therapy
Electrical and magnetic therapy is both based around the same method but use different forces for achieving the effects. As you may guess form the name, electrical therapy involves application of weak electrical currents to the affected area, which stimulates regeneration and provides pain relief. Magnetic therapy uses the same method, only that it involves the application of magnets for creating a magnetic field around the affected region. Both methods are commonly used in relieving joint conditions associated with chronic pain such as arthritis and osteoporosis. Still, these techniques do not provide relief for acute pain as oral medications.
Surgery
Surgery is the most radical form of pain management and is used only in the most extreme cases when the pain is unbearable and there's a precise cause of pain identified in the body. Surgery provides relief both for acute and chronic pain but is only applied when all other pain management techniques have failed.
